[Jacob-list] What's in a name?

Our flock name is Hillside.  Until 2 weeks ago, we lived for 33+ years in
the Central Valley of California, which has neither hills nor hillsides.  We
selected Hillside with a particular knoll in mind for building a retirement
house (and barn!) on my family's farm in Michigan.  Our sheep arrived in
Michigan last October, we joined them last week, construction of our house
and barn will be completed by late spring, and by early summer I hope to see
our flock grazing on hillside pastures.

We named our Farm Castle Rock because we live on
Castle Rock Rd., down the road from Castle Rock Park. 
We like the name and the formation that gave the road
its name.  I have since found that there are "Castle
Rock" formations all over the place and How wierd, my
sister lived in Castle Rock , Colo.for awhile after we
named our farm.
  I wait till the names suggest themselves, but we
have a small flock so I do not need lots of names. 
Last year Princess was named within 3 min. of birth
because of the way she always posed herself, like she
was "all that".  A number of our ewes are named by
others.  The babies usually have such distinct
personalities it is not difficult to think of a good
name but we are very picky about the names of those we
intend to keep because we will be using them all the

My farm is named, rather inelegantly, CritterLand Farm.  It started as a
joke in my family, and all of a sudden it stuck, and then my BIL made me a
big metal sign with that name--so I'm CritterLand.     Individual
"critters", whether sheep, goats, alpacas,  or any of the other various
animals that find their way here, are usually named for either appearance,
behavior, or specific incidents.     I have a sheep named Chewee because her
dam was so enthusiastic about cleaning her off at birth she chewed half her
tail off before I figured out what she was doing and stopped her.  Flipsie
was born rather rapidly while her dam was stuck upside down ("flipped") on
her back, wedged between a feeder and a wall in an area she wasn't supposed
to be able to get in to.     Miss Priss walked like she was too good to
touch the ground and had facial markings resembling pursed lips.
Sometimes my warped sense of humor takes over, as well.... one year  the
first ram lamb to hit the ground af
ter a long series of ewe lambs became ShaNaNa (after the group of the same
name), because of one of their songs--- he had a "rama lamba ding dong".
So, with the exception of one maternal line of goats whose names all begin
with J,  critters around here can wind up with just about any kind of name
imaginable.

First let me say, this has been the most fun reading in a long time!
   
  I have Sugarpine Farms since we live in the Sierra Nevada foothills at the
elevation where sugarpine trees start appearing.
   
  My husband wanted to have fun with our place, so our chicken coop looks
like an old mercantile (with dental trim, a tall false front and a front
porch for the rocking chair).  Our sheep shed (when finally built) will be
in the style of a livery or blacksmith's shop.
   
  So obviously we name our sheep using the Old West for ideas.  Calamity
Jane has always been a trouble-maker (opening gates, stealing tools,
sneaking into the house, etc., etc.).  Madeline was named for a singer that
used to do her act on horseback, Lady Godiva-style.  Lillie (Langtree) is
known by the name Two Bit because the breeder threw her in to the package
for only $25, and finally Molly (a well known lady of the evening) is known
as Hoser because she has a stripe on the top of her head like the dog from
the movie Strange Brew.
   
  We will use real and fictional names, whichever seems to fit the lamb.

I agree - it's been really fun to read.  You can sure see how creative our
Jacob breeders and how much fun we are all having naming our lambs and our
farms.

I think I solved the mystery nose bleed, at least on our farm. I remembered
from last year a couple of other people had sheep with this problem so I
thought I would post this. Yesterday evening at feeding time, two of my
adult ewes got into a pecking order squabble. My three year old ewe, the
same and only one that gets nose bleeds, was vying for top rank with my
oldest ewe. The older ewe who is small but feisty, has a slightly damaged
horn and decided not to fight fair, and  ended the fight with a hard bash to
the bridge of the others nose causing a nose bleed. She tried that several
times before placing that winning blow just right. That particular 3 yo. has
always been pushy, so it wouldn't surprise me if it wasn't the dry climate
causing this after all.
