Daniel my reply 12/6/04. And I just had a windscreen damaged yesterday on
the newly acquired 300SE that had a perfect non-pitted glass with the state
inspection sticker not yet dry. So, I am up for a replacement at some
point. This will make 4 in 12 months all on MB's, really had me rattled
yesterday.

"Hi Nick:
When the chrome trim was removed from the window glass at the top (2 pieces
with a mend in the center) they probably snapped one or more of the riveted
clips that hold the chrome in place. When this happens you loose the other
side of the rivet creating a 1/8 diameter or so hole in the roof line behind
the chrome which will make a fair amount of wind noise.
Two ways to fix this... one is two buy new clips from Mercedes and pop rivet
in place just above the glass/sealant line if you can get the proper angle
of attack with the head of the rivet gun or... two is to apply a sealant to
the hole that has been created from the loss of the rivet.
In either case you must remove the top two chrome trim strips. I believe
there are (6) clips on the top roof line and then the center mend and the
two male inserts to the side reveals as I recall. Keep in mind that lifting
the strips may cause other clips to snap from the repeated lifting. I did
replace all of the rusted clips on my 300SE while the glass was out. I did
make the sealant repair to one missing clip on a 300E where the glass had
just been installed and the pop rivet gun head would have impacted the edge
of the glass.
Regards,
Dick"
