My 87 560SEL was side swiped several months ago and did very little actual
damage, but looked worse. Anyway, I got a repair estimate for $6500 only to
have the insurance company tell me that anything over $3900 would be a
total. I fixed it myself for much less, so I'm satisfied.
I would highly recommend that you get a professional estimate by a reputable
company to use as the basis for your battle. My estimate, in CA, cost about
$250, but got me a couple of thousand more when my 300D was totaled. I tried
common sense (one owner 21 year old car), photos showing an extremely
clean/shiny car, and statements from friends/family about being completely
anal about taking care of the car, but it was the professional estimate that
did the trick.
Good luck, remember to be patient, and run up the management chain at the
insurance company when they start the stall.
Later,
Mike R.

For those that were in KC you'll remember this as the car I blew an
exhaust gasket out of on the way there;-)
