[W126 Coupe] My 560SEL

Detector under the rear bumper AFAIK is only for built-in systems. It's
for detection of radar from behind of course (don't know how much good
it does behind the bumper. The ones I know of are through the bumper).
My aunt has a set up like that on her Boxster. There is one red LED on
each side of the speedo down near the bottom of the speedo cutout. The
one in left is for rear and in right for front (I think, might be
reversed). The faster they blink/beep the closer you are to the radar
source. It was picking up false alarms left and right though. A friend
of mine had a 560SEL that had a built in system he claimed came from the
factory (I'm thinking it was dealer installed though). On each side of
the speedo there was a green light a red light, signifying different
closeness levels to the source, one pair was for back, one was for
front. Neither of the built-in systems worked that well. Something I did
see on here once that was quite intriguing (I've also seen it for
Porsche's on ebay) is a set up where they build a valentine one (might
just be the V1 display, not sure) into the rear view mirror. There was a
company in NYC mentioned on this list before that could do it to any
car. It was a $500 service IIRC.

Well Dan your post is encouraging. Vedat and Richard leave me feeling a
little more tentative in taking unnecessary risks. One last question
what is the purpose of the detector under the rear bumper??? And, I'll
be behaving until the SEC comes out of it's winter hibernation so I am
safe for a while.

Regards to all,

Dick in Boston where it is mighty cold and windy tonight...
