For sure, there are plenty of W126 sixes with manual transmissions. I've
seen both 4- and 5-speeds, with both the 1981-85 M110 engine and the 86-up SOHC
sixes. I have a 1985 280SE with 4-speed in my driveway right now. I bought it
for $2500 from its long-time owner. Simply a wonderful car--it never for a
moment feels underpowered--but it truly begs for different gearing (4,000 rpm @
76 MPH).
I presently hope to put a 1994-vintage Borg Warner T56 in my 560SEC Euro
conversion. The first gear in some of the early-production transmissions was 3.36
versus 2.97 for the rest of the production run. With a 3.27 rear gear, that
gives about 41 mph in first, 67 mph in second, and 104 mph in
third........better than even the most-optimistic trap speed for the 1/4. So...two shifts in
the quarter. Also a 0.62 overdrive, for 75 mph at 2,000 rpm in 6th.
