Oh, you meant legit racing. Still, I thought that those who put stick
tranny's on dragsters put tranny's with straight cut gears, thus taking
out the need to clutch, thus I don't see where that full second is
going.

  Actually, I was referring to preferring an automatic over a stick for
drag racing. When I was in high school in the late 70's (and for a few
years after), I ran a '69 Camaro with a 427 with a tunnel-ram and two
390 Holleys, a Muncie M-22 close-ratio 4-speed and 4.56 12-bolt Posi on
the local drag strips. Also did a lot street racing, won a lot of money
with that car! In 1981, I yanked the Rock Crusher and installed a B&M
turbo 400. My times dropped by over a second! I would never have been
able to build a car like that if my grandfather hadn't owned a Chevy
dealership, and I had a 110 mile paper route I ran in my Junior and
Senior year of high school( ran it in a '62 6-cylinder 4-door Nova that
I bought expressly for that purpose, made about $800 a month, which was
very good money for a high school student in '79 & '80). We have 5
strips within an hour's drive of Knoxville, four 1/8 mile, and one 1/4
mile.
 I wouldn't consider dragging a Benz! I would prefer a 5-speed in my SEC
for all the fun mountain roads in my area. A lot more fun than an
automatic. But if I got froggy, and ran across an SEC body without a
drivetrain, I might just tub it, subframe and four-link the rear, and
drop in a nice healthy Big Block Chevy and a built Powerglide and hit
the strip again (don't know about the street, they're too harsh on
street racers these days, and I'm a little too old to go to jail for
drag racing!). :)
