[W126 Coupe] painted grille

Has anyone stripped the SEC grille of its chrome and painted it semi-gloss black? The chrome trim in the center of my 89 SEC grille has started to peel off. I have located new grilles, but they are all $500+. My grille is in good shape otherwise. 

I have seen it on some of the "tuner" SECs, like AMG and the like, but those are usually body color. My SEC is a sort of teal color and I don't think the grille would look right body color, so I was thinking semi-gloss black. 

What do you guys think?
