[W126 Coupe] Transmission Question

I finally got my car back on the road after a LONG motor rebuild /
replacement project. Many posts from the group have been very helpful over
the past few months as I have done the work.
The question I have is a transmission question. I was at speed. Everything
fine. I then noticed a lack of power. Gave it gas and realized then that
the engine was fine. It was as if I had pushed in the clutch of a manual
shift car. No "connection" to the trans was the symptom. There was no
noise, no hesitation, no indication of any kind that there was a problem.
Have not got the car to a place where I can get under it yet (that is
another AAA story for later), so I apologize in advance if this problem
turns out to be a simple third grade solution.
Fluids all OK. No apparent leaks. Engine starts and runs normally.
Questions:
1. What electronic control / connections / etc are required. Fuse? Plug
came out of trans?
2. If the mechanical shift linkage came off does the trans default to
neutral? Shift rod off of trans?
3. The cable attached to the throttle linkage at firewall serves what
purpose? (it is attached)
Trans is a fresh rebuild (less than 100 miles) Car is 1986 560 SEC.
Thoughts please?
