[Retros] Correctness of Animals Chess Problems

Dear retro friends,

Mario Richter has informed me that the following problem (which I posted this morning) is C+.

Bernd Gräfrath (Germany)

1. P P 2. H H+ 3. H PxP 4. A PxA 5. HA PxH+ 6. H AxH 7. A P=A 8. H A 9. AxA HxA#.

Solution: 1. d4 c5 2. Bh6 Qa5+ 3. Qd2 cxd4 4. Nc3 dxc3 5. 0-0-0 cxd2+ 6. Kb1 Nxh6 7. Rc1 d1R 8. Ka1 Re1 9. Rxe1 Qxe1#.

So I think that Alain can present both of my problems at his website.

However, Mario points out that Alain's conventions (see his e-mail of 20 Nov. 2007) are more specific than those mentioned by Peter, whom he quotes. I think there are good reasons to accept the additonal codes of "HA" for castling and "P=A" or "P=H" for promotions. The danger of cooks is more easily avoided, and then we can be more strict about the uniqueness of the solution (including the order of moves).

It is more controversial whether e.p.-captures should be marked differently from the normal PxP, namely by P%P. And I am not sure whether Alain is in favour of the code "P=?", in addition to "P=A" and "P=H".

Best wishes,

Bernd
