Jim,

Yes, with your set-up, it can make a difference and may be used to make the 
difference.

But what should happen is that once the mixture is set via that screw 
(anti-clockwise to lean, clockwise to rich) then idle should be @ 550 +rpm 
in 'P' or 'N'.

If the idle is higher orlower than this, then there is an issue elsewhere 
that needs to be addressed. High idle should not be resolved by playing with 
the mixture screw (except perhaps on your supercharged machine). The idle 
control unit governs the idle through collection of a number of parameters.
